St Brigid's Well

Holy Well/ Hut Site

On St Brigid's day, 1st February, I decided to seen If there were any local wells dedicated to her. After scouring a few maps I found this really interesting site at Brideswell Big. All I could see of the well was the source of a small stream that runs westward into the Mine river. The stream runs through the southern chamber of a conjoined hut site. The northern hut was originally corbelled but has since collapsed. The other chamber was unroofed and inside it is a stone known as St Bride's track. There is no doubt that this stone acted as a flume to direct the water. It reminded me of St Brigid's slippers at the holy well in Kildare.

Situated: From Gorey head west on the R772. At Crannford, 6 kilometres, take a left turn for Askamore. After 1.4k turn right. 3.3k turn left. The well is on the right 300 metres down this road.
